With his newfound garage paradise, complete with epoxy-coated floors and a two-post lift, ChrisFix is on a mission to explore the birthplace of the iconic tool storage units. As the heart of the operation in Missouri beats with the legacy of over 30 million toolboxes crafted since 1978, the Factory stands as a testament to American manufacturing prowess.
The symphony of steel begins with coils of American Steel from Arkansas, each weighing a staggering 24,000 pounds - equivalent to six passenger cars. The precision of the slitter machine cuts the metal into smaller coils, ensuring no material goes to waste in this Factory where approximately 7.2 million pounds of Steel are recycled annually. The press machine then works its magic, stamping out sheets of metal that will soon become the sturdy drawers of the Craftsman toolbox, each sheet transformed into a drawer with over 200 tons of pressure.
The artistry continues as the front pieces of the drawers are meticulously crafted, with edges stamped and bent to form the signature handles. Welding becomes a ballet of sparks and precision as the drawers are seamlessly fused together, ensuring durability and strength. Meanwhile, the creation of the toolbox shell unfolds with the addition of ridges for extra reinforcement, courtesy of an industrial robot arm that brings unparalleled accuracy to the process. As the sides are welded onto the back and the top part of the box is seamlessly integrated, the toolbox begins to take shape - a symbol of quality and excellence in American manufacturing.
