In this exhilarating drag race, the team at carwow pits a modified Suzuki Jimny against the iconic Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 from the 1980s. The Suzuki Jimny has undergone a transformation by Twisted, turning it into a pocket-sized AMG G63. With upgraded suspension, a turbocharged 1.5L engine, and a switchable all-wheel drive system, this little beast boasts 170 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. However, the modifications come with a hefty price tag of £40,000, making this Jimny a £60,000 machine.
On the other hand, the standard Suzuki Jimny, owned by Nick, offers a more modest 101 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque from its naturally aspirated 1.5L engine. It weighs slightly less at 1,035 kg and has a price tag of around £25,000. But let's not forget the star of the show, the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9, the legendary hot hatch from the 80s. With 130 horsepower and 161 Nm of torque, this lightweight car, weighing in at 860 kg, is a force to be reckoned with. However, it comes with a price tag of around £25,000, making it no bargain.
The drag race commences, and the modified Jimny struggles to find traction, giving the Peugeot an early advantage. Despite its valiant efforts, the Jimny falls short, losing the race. But the team decides to have a rematch, and this time, the Jimny manages a better launch, but the Peugeot still takes the lead and secures another victory. Finally, in the decider race, the Jimny again fails to outpace the Peugeot, leaving the 205 GTI triumphant.
In terms of performance, the Peugeot 205 GTI completes the quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds, followed closely by the modified Jimny at 16.9 seconds. The standard Jimny lags behind with a time of 19.5 seconds. Moving on to a rolling race, the Peugeot's power and gear ratios prove advantageous as it surges ahead, leaving the Jimnys in its wake. Even in the brake test, the Peugeot impresses with its stopping power, while the knobbly tires on the Jimny hinder its performance.
Despite the Jimny's valiant efforts, it is clear that the Peugeot 205 GTI reigns supreme in this battle of the hot hatches. Its lightweight design, power, and agility make it a true legend of the 80s. However, the modified Jimny's transformation into a mini AMG G63 showcases the potential of this small SUV. While the Jimny may not have won the races, it certainly proves that it can hold its own against a classic icon.
