Today on TFL Slip Test, Alex and I took the new Honda Pilot Black Edition for a spin off-road, testing its mettle with that fancy all-wheel drive system. Starting with the front wheels stuck, the Pilot effortlessly engaged the rear wheels, showcasing the prowess of the i-VTM4 system. Moving on to the diagonal slip test, power distribution to the wheels with traction was seamless, proving the Pilot's capability. But things got interesting when only the front left tire had traction - a challenge that required Trail mode to conquer. Despite some initial struggles, the Pilot eventually powered through, demonstrating its off-road chops.
Inside the Pilot Black Edition, a mix of modern tech and good ol' physical buttons for climate control sets the tone. The cabin is spacious, boasting heated and ventilated seats, a Bose audio system, and a plethora of cup holders - 14 to be exact. Transitioning to the back row, passengers are treated to comfort with heated seats, power outlets, USB ports, and even reclining seats for that extra touch of luxury. Under the hood, a 3.5L V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission drives the all-wheel drive system, a standout feature of the Pilot that shines off-road.
Taking the Pilot off-road on a trail test revealed its true capabilities - while normal mode struggled, engaging Trail mode made a world of difference. Despite its limitations in articulation, the Pilot proved its worth with the right tires and Trail mode activated. Priced at $56,000, the Black Edition offers luxury features but may pale in comparison to the more rugged Trail Sport model. Overall, the Honda Pilot Black Edition impresses both on and off-road, serving as a comfortable and capable family hauler for up to eight passengers.
