In this episode of Jay Leno's Garage, we dive into the world of a 1978 Chevrolet C30 that underwent a remarkable transformation by the skilled hands of Empire Fabrications. Swapping out its original 454 gas engine for a robust 24 valve Cummins powerhouse paired with a six-speed Allison Transmission, this truck now boasts enhanced power, torque, and fuel efficiency. The diesel conversion not only offers practicality for daily use but also serves the towing purpose, making it a versatile workhorse on the road.
Empire Fabrications left no stone unturned in this project, customizing the truck with a Banks high RAM, hotside turbo, and a meticulously crafted intercooler system. The addition of dual batteries ensures reliable performance during towing, while the Ford Raptor bed light switch and rubber bed mat add modern convenience to this classic vehicle. The attention to detail is evident in the Empire special badging, original colors restoration, and the intricate exterior detailing that sets this truck apart from the rest.
Inside the C30, the bench seat modification strikes a perfect balance between comfort and functionality, complemented by Dakota Digital gauges and a restored original steering wheel. The restoration process, which involved using OEM steel and restoring the ACP wood grain, showcases Empire Fabrications' commitment to preserving the truck's heritage while infusing modern upgrades. The driving experience is a testament to the torque advantage of diesel, offering a solid yet delicate feel that harks back to the golden age of trucks.
