Throttle House, those cheeky chaps, have gone and done it. They've only gone and bought themselves a Golf R as their family car. Now, you might be thinking, "Why on earth would they choose a Golf R? Aren't there more exciting options out there?" Well, let me tell you, they've got some solid reasons for their decision.
First off, they wanted a hatchback. None of those three-row monstrosities or boring crossovers for them. They wanted something compact and practical. And let's not forget the allure of all-wheel drive. Throttle House has always been adamant that snow tires are more important than all-wheel drive, but they couldn't resist the temptation of having both. With the Golf R's front-wheel drive-based haldex system and the trick differential from the Audi RS3, this little hatchback can send 100% of its torque to the rear outside wheel. It's got drift mode, for crying out loud! Who doesn't love a hatchback that can drift?
But it's not just about the performance. Throttle House also considered the EV route. They know how amazing electric vehicles can be for daily driving, with their instant torque and seamless gear changes. However, they had to think about their specific use case. Long drives in the winter, battling freezing temperatures, and the added complication of finding charging stations. It just didn't make sense for them. Plus, there's the issue of battery replacement costs and the rapid advancement of EV technology, which could make their purchase outdated in no time.
So, they went with the Golf R. It's got a potent turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a comfortable interior, and a driving experience that puts a smile on their faces. They even have a nostalgic connection to the Golf, as they grew up with hatchbacks in their family. And let's not forget the value for money. The Golf R, essentially a baby RS3, comes in at a fraction of the price. It's a no-brainer, really.
In the end, Throttle House made the right choice. The Golf R ticks all the boxes for them. It's fun, comfortable, fast, and classy. It may not be the most adventurous choice, but it's the one that suits them best. So, hats off to Throttle House for putting their money where their mouths are and buying the Golf R. It's a decision that Jeremy Clarkson himself would approve of.
