Halo cars, those magnificent beasts that grace the automotive world with their presence. Donut takes us on a journey through some of the most intriguing and elusive examples of these machines. First up is the Ford GT90, a concept car that promised to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic GT40. With a monstrous V12 engine and a top speed of 235 mph, this beast was a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, it never made it to production, leaving us to wonder what could have been.
Next, we have the Yamaha OX99-11, a street car born out of Yamaha's failed attempt at F1 engine supply. With a high-revving V12 engine and a 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds, this car had the potential to be a true contender. However, the Japanese economic crash of the mid-90s put an end to its dreams of hitting the streets.
Moving on, we come across the Nissan R390 GT1, a street version of a race car built to comply with FIA rules. With impressive performance figures and a top speed of 220 mph, this car had the potential to dominate the roads. Sadly, the demise of the GT1 class meant that its glory was short-lived.
But fear not, for the Mercedes CLK GTR is here to save the day. This championship-winning car proved that Mercedes could compete with the likes of McLaren and Porsche. With its stunning design and unbeatable performance, it became a legend in the world of racing. Only 25 road-going examples were ever produced, making it a true collector's item.
As we delve further into the world of Halo cars, we encounter one-offs that never made it past the concept stage. The Volkswagen Phaeton, a luxurious competitor to the Mercedes S-Class, failed to capture the hearts of buyers despite its impressive features. Similarly, the Hyundai Equus aimed to establish Hyundai as a luxury automaker, but its success was overshadowed by the birth of Genesis.
Then, we stumble upon the Subaru SVX, a peculiar sports coupe that defied expectations. With its flat-six engine and unique design, it carved its own path in the automotive world. And let's not forget the weird Cadillacs, like the Cadillac CN and Cadillac 16, both of which showcased the American manufacturer's ambition and engineering prowess.
Lastly, we explore cars that actually influenced the market. The Plymouth Prowler and PT Cruiser, two retro-styled vehicles, had vastly different fates. While the Prowler failed to make a lasting impact, the PT Cruiser became a sensation, saving Chrysler from the brink and solidifying its place in automotive history.
Halo cars, whether they succeed or not, continue to captivate our imagination and push the boundaries of what's possible in the automotive world. They may be rare, elusive, and sometimes even strange, but their legacy lives on, inspiring future generations of car enthusiasts.
