In a quest to recreate the iconic Bert TransAm, the MotorTrend Channel team stumbled upon a 1979 TransAm in Alabama, a far cry from the desired 1977 black T-top. Despite its blue hue and missing components, this beast showed promise with its unique features like Bandit plastic pieces and a T-top. The team embarked on a journey back to their shop, facing challenges like overheating and fuel delivery issues along the way.
Upon inspection, the TransAm revealed a cracked crossmember and various mechanical shortcomings, including brake and steering issues. Undeterred, the team tackled these problems head-on, replacing the fuel tank, sending unit, and fuel line to ensure consistent pressure for their upcoming modifications. With a new nitrous oxide system and a DIY paint job transforming the car's appearance, the team geared up for a test run to unleash the full potential of the 455 engine.
The moment of truth arrived as the team put the TransAm to the test, pushing it to its limits with a successful nitrous run that showcased the raw power hidden within this budget-friendly beast. Despite its humble beginnings and initial setbacks, the 1979 TransAm proved to be a worthy contender in the quest to recreate the legendary Bert TransAm. With determination and a touch of DIY magic, the MotorTrend Channel team breathed new life into this classic car, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead.
