Tony Stewart, the racing legend, joins Brian Lohnes and John McAn on the Hot Rod Pod at the PRI show. This man is a force to be reckoned with, having earned a place in six racing Halls of Fame. From Indy Car to NASCAR, he's done it all. But let's talk about the big news that broke at the PRI show. Tony's wife, Leah Pruett, had an incredible season in Top Fuel, finishing third. And now, she wants to start a family. Tony fully supports her, and they agreed that Leah should make the decision on when to start a family. It's not an easy decision for a professional female racer, as it can disrupt their whole season. Tony jokingly said, "Let me know when I need to start buying stuff."
Now, let's dive into Tony's journey into Top Fuel. Initially, he wasn't keen on the idea. He hadn't even caught up to the alcohol car yet. But after a season with the alcohol car, Tony became more confident. They had narrowed down the list of potential drivers to Lyle Barnett, a badass promod driver. Tony was comfortable with that choice. However, Leah asked him again if he wanted to be on the list, and this time, he felt more ready. As Tony puts it, "How do you know if you're ready?" But with his experience in the third fastest class, he knows that driving a Top Fuel car requires being on top of your game.
Tony's career has been marked by his cautious approach to advancements. He believes in climbing the ladder step by step, not skipping any rungs. He recalls turning down offers from top teams like Hendrick Motorsports and Team Cool Green because he didn't feel ready. He wanted to ensure he was prepared for the next step. This mindset has served him well throughout his career.
In addition to his racing achievements, Tony is known for his incredible feat of racing in the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, not just once, but twice. The first attempt was challenging, with Tony experiencing a shoulder injury during the race. But he pushed through and finished fourth in the Coca-Cola 600. Tony's career has been filled with strategic decision-making and a willingness to take on new challenges. He's a true racing legend.
