MotorTrend brings us the new Seventh Generation Mustang GT, a glorious ode to American muscle, with its five-liter coyote engine and six-speed transmission. This car is a middle finger to the EV trend, and I couldn't be happier. It's loud, it's big, and it's everything a muscle car should be. Ford has managed to keep the Mustang's racing heritage intact while adding some modern touches.
Under the hood, the GT's coyote V8 has been upgraded with new air boxes, a larger plenum intake, and new camshaft stuff, resulting in an impressive 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. It's not the quickest car out there, but my God, is it fun to drive. The six-speed manual transmission is a joy to use, even if the gears are a bit long. The engine can take a beating, and it's a true testament to the Mustang's heritage.
Visually, the new Mustang takes inspiration from the first generation, and it looks mean. The front end has a heavy hood brow and a sagged-down appearance that adds to its aggressive stance. Inside, the seats are comfortable and supportive, and the giant curved screen adds a touch of modernity. However, I do wish there were more physical buttons for added functionality.
Now, let's talk about the driving experience. The Mustang drives like a Mustang, no surprises there. But here's the thing: the steering is numb to the point of amusement. You can literally hear the tires losing grip before you feel the steering wheel telling you. It's a bit of a joke, really. However, the car makes up for it with its extra sticky tires and optional Magna ride suspension. The Brembo brakes are nothing short of spectacular, and the performance package adds even more to the driving experience.
In a world full of boring cars, the Mustang stands out as a true driver's car. It may not have changed drastically from the previous generation, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Mustang is a car that's meant to be enjoyed, and it delivers on that promise. So, let's forget about trying to make it something it's not and appreciate it for what it is: a ridiculous and fantastic machine.
