In this episode from the M539 Restorations, the team embarks on an ambitious project known as Project Cologne. They set out to transform a humble E46 325i into a track-ready beast by swapping out its tired engine with a potent powerplant from a 2004 330i donor car. It's a tale of redemption and speed, as they aim to unleash this rocket ship on the legendary Nürburgring.
But before they can conquer the track, they must confront the challenges that lie ahead. The team discovers that the donor car, with its rusted chassis and engine damage, is the perfect candidate for their mission. With determination in their hearts, they dive headfirst into the engine and gearbox swap, facing obstacles like shredded belts and missing flaps along the way.
Once the engine is out, the team performs a series of tests to assess its condition. They breathe a sigh of relief as the compression and leakdown tests reveal a healthy engine, despite its neglected past. With renewed confidence, they press on, removing various components and inspecting them meticulously. They find worn rod bearings, a faulty water pump, and a disappointing alternator, but the overall state of the engine gives them hope.
As the team works tirelessly to clean and rebuild the engine, they encounter more surprises, like a missing diesel valve and a bafflingly clean intake manifold. Despite these mysteries, they remain undeterred, replacing parts and upgrading components to ensure the engine's performance on the track. With each step, they inch closer to their goal of unleashing Project Cologne's true potential. In the end, we get a fun lap around the 'ring with the expertise guidance of Misha Charoudin!
