In a riveting review, the Donut crew delved into the controversial Lexus SC 430, a car famously dubbed the worst by Top Gear. This luxury convertible, intended to rival the likes of the Mercedes CLK 430 and Porsche 911 Cabrio, fell short in the eyes of critics. The SC 430's design, inspired by yachts, divided opinions, with Top Gear claiming it failed to capture the essence of a luxurious vessel. However, the team's visit to the marina revealed some subtle yacht-like features, sparking a debate on the car's aesthetic appeal.
Moving inside, the SC 430 boasted an interior adorned with maple wood and a premium Mark Levinson sound system. Despite Top Gear's disdain for the wood accents, the Donut crew found the interior to have aged gracefully, a hallmark of Lexus craftsmanship. Under the hood, the SC 430 housed a 4.3L V8 engine producing 300 horsepower, a figure deemed insufficient for the car's hefty weight. While Top Gear criticized the ride quality as akin to a wet sponge, the team found the driving experience surprisingly comfortable and enjoyable.
One of the major bones of contention was the pricing of the SC 430, with an eye-watering $59,000 price tag in 2002. This steep cost led Top Gear to question Lexus's decision-making, given the car's perceived shortcomings. Despite these criticisms, the Donut crew ultimately disagreed with Top Gear's verdict, deeming the SC 430 far from the worst car in history. The team appreciated certain aspects of the car, such as its enduring interior quality and driving experience, highlighting that while it may not have been perfect, it certainly did not deserve the title of the worst.
