On the latest episode of MotorTrend Channel's "Roadkill Garage," the team dives into the restoration of a 1956 Chevy field car. Originally just a body on a worn-out chassis, they perform a chassis and body swap with Hot Rod Garage, resulting in a pristine body atop a restored chassis. The crew then tackles the creation of a powerful "Covid 350" small block Chevy engine during the pandemic, boasting an impressive 500 horsepower. Despite initial success with the engine, issues arise during a road trip to Samoa drag strip, revealing faulty spark plug wires and a problematic clutch that lead to engine damage and low compression in certain cylinders.
Determined to rectify the engine's issues, the team removes it for a thorough inspection, uncovering bent intake valves causing leaks. While no visible piston damage is found, concerns about the bottom end's integrity prompt a closer look. They check for metal fragments in the oil filter and scrutinize the rods and bearings, ultimately deciding to repurpose the engine as a cruiser due to reliability concerns. The plan shifts towards swapping in a Chevy 400 block engine with lower compression for enhanced performance, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in the field car's journey.
With the engine removal completed, the crew sets out to make necessary adjustments and upgrades before installing the new powerplant. Changes to the intake manifold are made, along with preparations for fitting the different cylinder heads. Despite challenges in sealing the intake manifold, the team perseveres and proceeds with installing the new engine, including the flywheel and clutch. Anticipation builds as they gear up to test the revamped field car with the upgraded engine at the drag strip, eager to see the results of their hard work and dedication unfold on the track.
