The Mercedes 500e, also known as the "wolf in sheep's clothing," is a car that demands attention. This understated Benz may not look like much from the outside, but under the hood lies a beastly 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 engine, co-developed and hand-assembled by Porsche. Yes, you heard that right, Porsche. This collaboration resulted in a sedan that can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 156 mph.
Now, let's talk about its unique features. The 500e has these beautifully crafted flared fenders that were so wide, they couldn't be developed on the normal E-class line. That's why they had to build it at the Porsche Factory. And if you look closely, you'll notice that the passenger side mirror is actually a different shape than the driver side. It's a quirky feature that supposedly gives you a better view out of the passenger mirror.
Inside, the 500e offers a luxurious experience with leather everywhere and wood trim. However, the wooden trim does make the car look a bit dated. The steering wheel is enormous, making you feel like you're piloting a boat. And there are some interesting controls, like a manual control for the driver side mirror and an automatic control for the passenger side. There's even a button for snow chains mode, which apparently changes the driving dynamics of the vehicle.
When it comes to driving, the 500e is more of a luxury cruiser than a sports car. Its suspension is tuned for comfort, so it's not the most nimble in corners. But when you put your foot down, the mid-range torque kicks in and it pulls like a freight train. The gearbox, however, can be a bit unpredictable, sometimes only kicking down one gear and leaving you with sluggish acceleration. But when it does kick down multiple gears, hold on tight because it shoots you off into the sunset.
In conclusion, the Mercedes 500e is a hidden gem in the automotive world. Its collaboration with Porsche gives it a unique edge, and with only 10,000 units ever made, it's a rare find. While it may not be the most exciting car to drive, it excels as a comfortable daily driver that still packs a punch. And with its value expected to increase over time, owning a piece of automotive history has never been more enticing.
