The MotorTrend Channel is back with another episode of Roadkill's Junkyard Gold, and this time they're exploring the many faces of GM muscle from 1964-1984 in Shelby, North Carolina. On this episode, viewers are taken on a journey to Sundell Auto Specialties, a 10-acre collection of GM muscle cars. Host Steve Magnotti, hot rod historian and author, is on the hunt for the next Roadkill junkyard rescue project.
Viewers are introduced to the Chevy Corvair, a low-priced economy model that arrived in 1960. It was sold as a wagon, four-door, and two-door, and for 1962, a turbo was added. To find out if you're looking at a turbo car, look for the word “spider” on the trunk. The turbocharged engine bumps the power from 95 to 150 horsepower, and the carburetor is a Carter Y8 series side draft carburetor. The turbo motor also has heavy-duty forged connecting rods and pistons.
The Corvair turbo cars all came with a gauge package, including a manifold pressure gauge, a tachometer that reaches 5500 RPM, and a cylinder head temperature gauge. The Corvair is an air-cooled engine, so the cylinder head temperature gauge is important to warn the driver to calm down if the engine is getting too hot. Only 6480 turbocharged Corvairs were built in 1964, and the total run on turbo cars was just about 50,000 units.
