In this episode from the MotorTrend Channel, the team embarks on a project that goes against their usual penchant for mechanical cleanliness. They decide to assemble their 1973 Dodge Dart without the usual pressure washing and painting, opting for a "dirty" approach. The idea is to get the car running first and worry about cleaning it up later, if they happen to fall in love with it. It's a refreshing departure from their usual meticulousness.
The focus of this episode revolves around the installation of the junkyard 5.9L Magnum engine, salvaged from their previous project car, the Rally Duster. They also discuss the acquisition of a used A833 Hemi four-speed transmission. The team dives into the nitty-gritty details of the installation process, including cutting out the floor to accommodate the transmission tunnel hump and the rust issues that often plague cars with rubber floor mats.
They take us through the steps of bolting the engine and transmission together, installing motor mount brackets, and fitting the headers. The decision to add power steering to the car is also explored, with the team opting for a power steering box installation. They encounter some challenges along the way, such as a leaking core plug, but their resourcefulness and expertise prevail.
The episode concludes with the installation of the rear axle, which required narrowing to fit the car. They discuss the handling issues and potential alignment problems they encounter, as well as the power steering pulling to the right. Despite these hiccups, the team remains determined to make the car a success. With the engine starting up and the car bouncing around a bit, it's clear that progress is being made, and the project is well underway.
