In a thrilling collaboration with Canon, Larry Chen embarked on a daring project to showcase the EOS R1 camera's prowess by capturing a unique Skate Session featuring jumping off-road trucks. This audacious endeavor brought together a team of journalists and professionals to put the camera through its paces in the rugged world of high-speed action photography. With jumping trucks provided by Terra crew and essential eye protection from Heatwave, the stage was set for an adrenaline-fueled day in the desert.
The action-packed day at Johnson Valley saw the team exploring various terrains, from sand dunes to rock crawling sections, with Cody from laser nut and Nick Nelson's UTV adding to the excitement. The off-road vehicles, including the Earth Cruiser from anti-gravity, showcased their capabilities while being captured by the powerful EOS R1. The event culminated in a workshop on surf photography in Palm Springs, led by the talented Zack Nole, at the Palm Spring Surf Club. Larry's appreciation for being the first Motorsports photographer among Canon's explorers of light was palpable.
Gratitude was extended to Evan Walsh for his instrumental role in organizing the event, which allowed for the unique features of the off-road trucks to be highlighted. From the innovative mitch made twin ibeam suspension to the impressive King shocks setup, each vehicle boasted remarkable engineering and design. Despite their powerful engines and advanced features like power windows and AC, these street-legal trucks were a testament to the passion and craftsmanship of their creators, most of whom built them in their own garages. Larry marveled at the blend of functionality and aesthetics that made these off-road machines not only capable but also visually striking.
