The 2024 Toyota Sequoia is a big, beefy SUV that promises a lot but falls short in some key areas. One of the biggest disappointments is the lack of a full-time four-wheel drive system or an auto function on the transfer case. This means that drivers have to manually switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive modes, which can be a hassle, especially for those who are not familiar with how these systems work. Toyota really needs to step up their game and incorporate some of the technology that General Motors has been using for years.
The Sequoia's design and engineering are based heavily on the Toyota Tundra, which has its pros and cons. On the positive side, it features a turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine with both direct and port injection, delivering a respectable 389 horsepower. The hybrid system, which includes a 48 horsepower electric motor, boosts the total system output to 437 horsepower and over 580 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain is virtually identical to the Tundra, which is a good thing.
In terms of off-road capability, the Sequoia offers a front independent suspension and the option to equip the TRD off-road package, which includes improved suspension, red Bilstein shocks, and a beefy TRD skid plate. However, there are some drawbacks, such as the low-hanging front chin spoiler that compromises ground clearance and the lack of shielding for the transmission. The rear of the vehicle features a solid axle, which is great for off-roading but sacrifices interior space, particularly in the third row.
Inside the Sequoia, there are some nice features, including power premium material seats, a spacious center console with plenty of storage, and a 14-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The cabin is comfortable and well-equipped, but the price tag of $882,000 seems quite steep for a Toyota. Overall, the Sequoia has its strengths, but it also has some major compromises that potential buyers should consider before making a decision.
