In the realm of rugged off-road beasts, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser has made a triumphant return, much to the delight of its loyal fan base. This new iteration ditches the old V8 engine in favor of a turbocharged hybrid 4-cylinder powerhouse, boasting an impressive 325 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Surprisingly, there's no V6 option available, unlike its posh cousin, the Lexus GX. While the switch to a more fuel-efficient engine is commendable, with the Land Cruiser achieving around 23 mpg combined, some enthusiasts may miss the raw power of the V8.
Visually, the Land Cruiser exudes a boxy, rugged charm that harks back to its legendary off-road capabilities. The exterior design features unique badging and a rather conspicuous tow hitch cover, adding a touch of quirkiness to its robust appearance. Inside, the cabin maintains a no-nonsense, functional vibe, with a focus on off-road controls like differential lockers and a multi-terrain select system. The infotainment system is responsive, offering essential features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though it lacks the larger screen found in its sibling, the 4Runner.
Despite its impressive off-road prowess and utilitarian design, the Land Cruiser's interior falls short in terms of excitement and branding compared to the 4Runner TRD Pro. The back seat, however, surprises with its spaciousness and thoughtful amenities such as rear climate control and convenient charge ports. Interestingly, the Land Cruiser bucks the trend by not offering a third-row seating option, a departure from models like the 4Runner and Lexus GX. The easy-folding rear seats hint at a potential future inclusion of a third row, adding a layer of intrigue to this rugged yet practical SUV.
