In the heart of West Georgia, the MotorTrend Channel crew is on a mission with their 1967 Baja Bug, gearing up for some serious suspension upgrades. The plan? Transforming the rear swing axle into an independent rear suspension system with a beefy 3x3 box and a 14-inch stroke shock for unrivaled control. Out goes the old transaxle, in comes an A2 bus transmission to make the IRS conversion a reality. Meanwhile, at the front, a kit boasting coilovers and a racking pinion is set to elevate the bug's suspension game with increased height, width, and strength.
The team tackles the radiator issue head-on, opting for an LS style radiator with 26 A fittings for a sleeker setup. With the engine out and parts disassembled, it's time to dive deep into the rear suspension upgrade process. From installing heavy-duty components like the 3X3 trailing arm to welding and modifying the front mount bracket, every step is crucial in the quest for off-road supremacy. The floor is clearanced, the transmission mount adjusted, and troubleshooting ensues to ensure a seamless fit for the bug's enhanced setup.
After overcoming challenges with clutch alignment and utilizing an old transmission as an alignment tool, the crew successfully installs the engine and tests the suspension with 31-inch tires. The ultimate test awaits in Johnson Valley, California, home of the King of the Hammers race. With a 10.5-second gap to bridge against a fierce competitor's time, the team revs up the bug for a thrilling race to redemption. The bug roars into action, tearing through the course with determination and grit, showcasing the fruits of their labor in a high-octane battle against the clock.
