In this momentous episode, the MotorTrend Channel team celebrates a remarkable milestone: the 10th anniversary of assembling the iconic General Mayhem, a 1968 Dodge Charger. As they fondly recall the challenges faced during the car's creation, including fender swaps and the installation of a 440 big block engine, memories come flooding back. Who could forget that fateful encounter with a Cal Trans person armed with an axe, who unexpectedly lent a hand on the side of the road? Ah, those were the days.
To commemorate this occasion, the team decides to take the General Mayhem to the Yellowstone drag strip in Montana, embarking on a thrilling road trip through Wyoming. But before the tire-scorching action can commence, a crucial task awaits: an oil change. But this is no ordinary oil change, my friends. No, the General Mayhem boasts an Acu sump, an accumulator that holds three quarts of oil. The team expertly explains the intricate process of draining and refilling the oil using the Acu sump, ensuring the car is primed for its drag strip debut.
And what a debut it is! With a modest 535 horsepower under the hood, the General Mayhem surprises everyone by clocking a time of 12.57 seconds at 109 mph on its first pass. Encouraged by this performance, the team makes some adjustments, resulting in an even more impressive time of 12.38 seconds at 111 mph on the second pass. It's a testament to their skills and determination.
But the adventure doesn't end there. The team decides to visit the historic Bandimere Speedway nestled in the Colorado Mountainside. This track, founded in 1958 by the legendary John Bandimere Sr., holds a special place in the hearts of automotive enthusiasts. They share fascinating tidbits about the track's innovations, such as the Rotator tire-turning system and the cul link system for timing. With great anticipation, they take the General Mayhem down the track, defying expectations and achieving a respectable time of 12.97 seconds at 106 mph.
In the end, it's not just about the numbers or the track times. It's about the journey, the camaraderie, and the shared passion for cars. The MotorTrend Channel team revels in their accomplishments, celebrating the General Mayhem's performance and the memories they've created along the way. It's a testament to the enduring spirit of automotive enthusiasts and the joy that comes from pushing the limits of both man and machine.
